Colorado’s Western Slope, what a treasure trove! One of my good friends lives in Palisade (right by Grand Junction), and no matter how many times I’ve been there, I’m always struck by the mountains, mesas and canyons within these perimeters. The Western Slope region is sparsely populated, but that’s part of the charm. Grand Junction, Montrose, Delta and Palisade are just some of my favorite spots to take in the small town mountain life this region offers.

Economic activity centers around ranching, mining, and tourism. Fruit farming is also prevalent in areas, including Grand Valley, where the town of Palisade is recognized as the center of Colorado Wine Country, with over 20 wineries, and home to the famous Palisade peaches. In downtown Palisade, the Book Cliffs (a series of desert mountains and cliffs in western Colorado and eastern Utah) are so close and visually intriguing, they’ll have you wondering if they’re a little sliver of Mars on Earth.

Take in the bounty at the top of The Grand Mesa (known as the largest flattop mountain in the world!) to really get the full picture of this area. The long drive up is well worth it, and filled with great spots to take in the views. A Western Slope journey that’s always full of visual surprises.
